Reading a certificate of analysis
A certificate of analysis (COA) documents the tests performed on a specific lot. Here is what each field means.
- Lot number
- Identifies the production batch. It matches the number printed on the vial.
- Identity
- Confirms the compound is what the label says, usually by mass spectrometry (MS).
- Purity
- Share of the target compound in the sample, measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
- Appearance
- Visual description of the product, for example a white lyophilized powder.
- Test date and laboratory
- When and where the analysis was carried out, with the analyst's signature.
